Gas and driving

See what a drive costs in fuel

The pump is the visible tip of a driving-cost iceberg.

  • Calculated from numbers you enter
  • About 3 minutes
  • Easy
  • No fixed savings figure

Not a pump price.

The short version

This is for someone pricing a drive in the United States. In a few minutes you can turn miles, miles per gallon, and a price per gallon you enter into a fuel cost for that trip, plus a cost per mile. There is no savings range on this page. The only numbers are the ones you enter. Nothing here was checked against a station, a study, or a national average. This page does not look up a pump price, does not offer a route, and does not promise cheaper gas.

The number on the sign

A pump shows a price per gallon in large type. That number answers “what does one gallon cost?” It does not answer “what does this drive cost in fuel?” The gallons are the miles divided by the miles per gallon. The trip is those gallons times the price you are using.

The pump is the visible tip of a driving-cost iceberg. After this, you can turn a trip’s miles, miles per gallon, and a price per gallon you enter into a fuel cost for that trip, plus a cost per mile. Insurance, tires, tolls, and parking are not in that fuel number.

What do you think this short trip costs in fuel?

This trip is made up so you can practice. It is not your drive, and the price is not a pump price. The fuel cost stays hidden until you choose.

  • Example errand

    18 miles

  • Example car

    24 miles per gallon

  • Example price you would type

$3.60 per gallon · made up

Which fuel cost feels closest, before the arithmetic is shown?

The sign is built as one gallon

Missing the trip is not a failure of attention. A pump is printed as the price of one gallon, because that is what you buy at the hose. That answers “what posts on the sign?” It does not answer “what does this many miles use?”

A short trip can still use most of a gallon, or only a fraction of one. From the station’s side, the large type is the gallon price. That is a real question. It is just the visible tip. The pump is the visible tip of a driving-cost iceberg. This page does not claim a station planned to hide the trip. It only multiplies the price you enter. It does not add insurance, maintenance, or a route.

Now run your own numbers

The free tool: See what a drive costs in fuel. You enter miles, miles per gallon, and a price per gallon. It shows the gallons, the fuel cost of the trip, and the cost per mile. It does not ask for an account. The answer is not behind the offer on that page. It does not look up a price.

The result on this page is free. A site-wide pass, pay what you can, is only a preview. It is not a separate charge to save this result. The pass would be for a medical bill dispute letter, a state heating-aid checklist, and a subscription cancellation script pack. Nothing on this page can charge you.

How we calculated this

Gallons = miles ÷ miles per gallon. Trip fuel cost = gallons × price per gallon. Cost per mile = trip fuel cost ÷ miles. The price is a number you enter. It is not fetched.

In the made-up trip, that is 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75 gallons, 0.75 × $3.60 = $2.70, and $2.70 ÷ 18 = $0.150 per mile. The lines stay hidden until you guess, unless JavaScript is off, in which case the trip is spelled out above. There is no national pump price and no savings range.

Limits of this guide

  • It does not look up a station, a city, or a national price.
  • It does not promise cheaper gas.
  • It does not offer a route, a traffic time, or a station comparison.
  • Insurance, tires, tolls, parking, and depreciation are not in the fuel number.
  • Groceries, bills, utilities, and housing each have their own page. Help Finder and medical bills each have their own page. They are not in this article.

Who this will not work for

  • Someone who needs a route or a cheaper station. This page does not offer either.
  • A price you did not enter. This page does not look one up.
  • A benefits, medical, legal, or housing decision. This page does not make one.

A pitfall

Anyone who asks you to pay before you can see the fuel cost of the trip is charging for multiplication. The result on this site is free. There is no affiliate link. Seeing the fuel cost is not cheaper gas, and this page does not promise cheaper gas.

A question, after the result

Should a drive show its fuel cost, or only the price on the pump?

Try the tool. Enter miles, miles per gallon, and a price per gallon. The pump is the visible tip of a driving-cost iceberg. That line does not include your numbers.
