The ones still in the bag

The price is for the whole pack. You may already know some items will go unused.

  • About 2 minutes

The short version

  • For someone buying a counted pack.
  • It shows the cost of the items you expect to keep.
  • It is not a guess about scraps, peels, or weight.

The moment

A pack has one price and a count. If you already know some pieces will not be used, the price of the pieces you keep is higher than the pack divided by every piece.

After this, you can see the cost of each item you expect to keep.

Your guess first

These packs are made up. Which kept item do you think costs less?

Made-up, keep all

$1.50

$9 pack, keep 6 of 6

Made-up, keep half

$3.00

$9 pack, keep 3 of 6

Why the number hides

The shelf price answers what leaves your hand today. It does not divide itself by the items you will actually use. That split is yours to make.

Now run your own numbers

See what the items you expect to keep cost

The answer there is free. Not on sale yet: one optional pass for the whole site, pay what you can, for a dispute letter, a heating-aid checklist, and cancellation scripts.

Do this next

  1. Read the pack price and the count.
  2. Decide how many you expect not to use.
  3. Enter those three numbers.
  4. Read the cost of one kept item.
  5. If the count changes, enter it again.

Who this will not work for

  • The edible share of meat or produce sold by weight.
  • A shrinking box compared with an older box.
  • A promise about what will spoil.

A pitfall

Setting a count aside is not a failure. It is information. Don't use the result to scold a purchase you already needed to make.

How this was calculated

Items kept = items in the pack minus items you expect not to use. Cost per kept item = pack price divided by items kept. You still pay the whole pack price.

This is arithmetic on the numbers you type. It doesn't know what you will set aside. You choose that count.
