The short version

This is for someone looking at the same grocery item they bought before, in the United States. The price on the box can sit still while the amount inside changes. In about two minutes you can see both footnotes and how far the size moved. There is no savings range on this page. Nothing here was checked against a store.

The box you already know

You reach for the same box. The price looks like the price you remember. The face of the box did not change. What can change is quieter: the ounces, the pounds, or the count printed in smaller type.

This is not a comparison of two different foods on the shelf today. That is a different unit. This one is last time and this time, for the same item. After this, you can tell whether the footnote moved even when the price on the box did not.

What do you think moved?

This pair is made up so you can practice. It is not a store price. The footnotes stay hidden until you choose.

Last time

$4.00

Made-up box · 16 oz

This time

$4.00

Same made-up box · 12 oz

The price on the box is the same. What happened to the price per ounce?

The face of the box can stay still

Missing a smaller net-weight line is not a failure of memory. The price answers “what do I hand over?” The size answers “how much is in here?” Those are different sentences, and only one of them is set in large type.

A design guess, not a diagnosis: the eye predicts from the price it remembers, and a quieter size change does not match that prediction. This page does not claim a brand planned to confuse anyone. It only separates the price that stayed from the amount that moved.

Now run your own numbers

The free app takes last time and this time. It shows both footnotes, which one is higher, and the size change as a percent of the earlier size. It does not ask for an account. The answer is not behind the offer on that page.

The result on this page is free. A site-wide pass, pay what you can, is only a preview. It is not a separate charge to save this result. The pass would be for a medical bill dispute letter, a state heating-aid checklist, and a subscription cancellation script pack. Nothing on this page can charge you.

How we calculated this

Unit price = price ÷ size. In the made-up pair, that is $4.00 ÷ 16 oz and $4.00 ÷ 12 oz. The size change is (new size − old size) ÷ old size, which is (12 − 16) ÷ 16 = 25% smaller. The footnotes stay hidden until you guess, unless JavaScript is off, in which case the pair is spelled out above.

The app uses the same division. Pounds and ounces are compared per ounce, using 16 ounces in a pound, and the percent uses those ounce amounts. Ounces are not converted into milliliters or into a count. There is no national price and no savings range.

Limits of this guide

  • It does not check a store, a flyer, or a receipt.
  • It does not say a size change was announced, hidden, or against a rule.
  • It does not compare nutrition, quality, or coupons.
  • Two different products on the shelf today belong in the unit-price unit, not this one.
  • Help Finder and medical bills each have their own page. They are not in this article.

Who this will not work for

  • Two different foods, even if the prices look alike.
  • Sizes in different kinds of units, such as ounces versus a count. The app refuses that instead of inventing a conversion.
  • A benefits, medical, legal, or housing decision. This page does not make one.

A pitfall

Anyone who asks you to pay before seeing both footnotes is charging for division. The comparison on this site is free. There is no affiliate link.

A question, after the result

Should a box that kept its price also say, in the same large type, that the amount inside changed?

Try the tool. Compare last time and this time by the footnote, not only by the price that stayed. That line does not include your numbers.
